What is known about the new Pope:
- Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has become the first American to sit on the Throne of St. Peter. He has taken the name Leo XIV.
- 69-year-old Robert Prevost was born in Chicago to a family of Italian, French, and Spanish descent.
- He earned a degree in mathematics in Philadelphia and joined the Order of St. Augustine in 1977, later becoming the global head of the order.
- A significant part of his service took place in Peru, where he gained a reputation as an effective and versatile church leader.
- He is known for his moderation. Like his predecessor Francis, he has strong ties to Latin America.
- In his first address to the faithful, the new Pope spoke about peace and continuing the legacy of his predecessor, Francis.
